Canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) describes a wide range of bacterial and viral causes of upper and lower respiratory tract disease. This case-based course will focus on diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the dog with CIRDC. It will include advice on how to interpret polymerase chain reaction panels and diagnose and guide therapy for acute respiratory distress syndrome in a dog. The benefits and shortcomings of bronchoalveolar lavage and transtracheal wash will be discussed, as will new guidelines and recommendations from the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases for antimicrobial use in the management of respiratory tract disease.

Properly treating a pet with diabetes can be a complicated experience for veterinary clinics and an overwhelming experience for pet owners. As the prevalence of diabetes in pets increases, it becomes more important to understand the basics of monitoring, available options, and benefits and limitations of each option in order to provide optimal care for diabetic pets. We will review the highlights of monitoring diabetes in cats and dogs and focus on current recommendations based on guidelines from veterinary organizations.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) infection is one of the most common and serious infectious diseases of dogs younger than 6 months. We will discuss the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of CPV and emphasize expected laboratory changes, including hematologic and electrolyte abnormalities. Exciting new treatments for CPV will be discussed, including the canine parvovirus monoclonal antibody (CPMA), which is the only monoclonal antibody treatment conditionally approved by the USDA that targets CPV. CPMA selectively binds and blocks canine parvovirus from entering and destroying the enterocytes that stop this destructive and potentially deadly virus.
